For Parents and Prospective Drexel Students
The Drexel Fencing Club is mainly a recreational club. While we are competitive within our league, compete in Club Nationals, and attend USFA tournaments, we are also have a strong academics-first mindset. Drexel can be be a difficult school to balance between personal time, academics, and social activities, and so it should be considered first whether or not Drexel is right for the student rather than its fencing club.
FAQ
How would you describe the Drexel Fencing Club?
The Drexel Fencing Club is a recreational club that gives people interested in fencing a space to learn about the sport. Our coach is very knowledgable about the fencing scenes, and many of our fencers do wish to go further into the sport rather than just being a collegiate athlete. While we can have a fierce competitive spirit, we also a club that loves the sport of fencing.
What are the facilities like at your club?
As a recreational club, we get many of our amenities through funds we fundraise and through member’s dues. We rent space through Drexel and purchase our own equipment. We have electric gear for members to borrow and strips for electrical fencing. While not the most ideal at times, good communication and teamwork helps fill in the gaps between us and a regular fencing club.
Is Drexel right for my student?
As many of our members can say, Drexel is a large commitment that should not be determined by someone else. Most majors will require an extra year for you student since most programs are 5 years. Due to the co-op program, is is likely your student will not have a summer break for 3 years after their freshman year. However, that is not to say the benefits can be great. Drexel has a high percentage of students getting hired right after college. Drexel is also a great place for research and hands-on experience for your intended career. It is also located close to Philly, a great city to experience. There are many factors that should be taken into consideration, and the no one at the Drexel Fencing Club would feel necessarily comfortable answering a very important question that only the student would know the answer to.
We highly recommend scheduling a visit to visit the campus and learn more about Drexel in general. We cannot do personalized visits/tours for students regarding the club.
